Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Feeling Stressed, Sleepless, Anxious or Overwhelmed?

The world in which we live is moving faster and faster and our senses are bombarded, often from the moment we open our eyes in the morning to the moment we go to bed. Turning out the lights, hungry for sleep and perhaps a moment of peace or ease and we find our minds racing with worry and running through our mental “to do” list. Where is ease or relief to be found?

What Is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

This stress reduction program was started at UMass Medical School by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn over 40 years ago. You will learn how to develop your own mindfulness practice through meditation, mindful movement, and body-based modalities.

Our instructor participated in UMass Medical School's Center for Mindfulness professional training program under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli. Admission to this training program was limited to those with extensive professional experience, with a solid meditation practice.

What Are the Exercises of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction exercise begins in your head with focusing. This is to mindfulness what stretching is to running. Focusing is how you begin to train your mind. Like a runner training for a race, you are training your mind to become more aware and to build awareness. Physically, this includes breathing, focusing on an object, paying attention to the body, walking slowly, paying full attention to the moment, mindful eating, yoga, riding out your emotions, and more.

How Is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Used?

This approach to body, mind, and health can increase one’s ability to manage difficult situations and make wise choices.

How Do I Know if MBSR Is Appropriate for Me?

Participating in an MBSR class can be a positive and life transforming experience. At the same time, meditation practice can be strenuous and requires some stability of physical and psychological health.

If you have recently experienced considerable trauma, significant depression, or anxiety, or are currently experiencing strong PTSD (post-traumatic stress), MBSR may not be appropriate for you at this time in your life. A therapist can help you assess the wisest course of action for you. You will also have a private consultation with the instructor at the end of the orientation. Please share any concerns you may have during this consultation.

What Are the Benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?

While mindfulness has been in practice for thousands of years, its relevance to good health has been renewed in modern medicine.

The cultivation of mindful awareness has been found to help with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • High blood pressure
