Pediatric Infectious Diseases

The mission of the division of pediatric infectious diseases is to provide expertise in the diagnosis, management and prevention of pediatric infectious diseases, including antimicrobial therapy, appropriate use of microbiological and immunological tests, and immunizations. In addition to patient care, the division is actively involved in medical education and research.

Patient Care Services

Patient care services include inpatient consultations and outpatient services. All appointments are scheduled after a consultation with the child's primary care provider and one of our infectious disease attending physicians.

  • The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic is available Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. on the lower level of Hasbro Children's Hospital.
  • The Pedi II Clinic for HIV-infected children and adolescents is collaboratively sponsored by Hasbro Children's Hospital and AIDS Care Ocean State. The clinic provides medical services for HIV-infected children and infants born to HIV-infected mothers. The Pedi II Clinic is located at 245 Chapman Street in the Medicine-Pediatrics clinic, and sees patients on Tuesday mornings.

Conditions We Treat

  • Bone and joint infections
  • Fever (long-lasting or recurrent), including PFAPA
  • Lyme disease
  • Lymph node infections (e.g., adenitis, including atypical mycobacteria)
  • Recurrent infections (e.g. suspected immunodeficiency)
  • Recurrent strep throat and rheumatic fever
  • Staphylococcal and streptococcal infections, including MRSA
  • Tuberculosis

Research

The pediatric infectious diseases staff members are also involved in research projects, including: 

  • Clinical vaccine trials
  • Immunization delivery
  • Epidemiology and etiological diagnosis of gastroenteritis
  • Prevention of HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents
  • Pediatric AIDS in developing countries
