Consent and Assent in Pediatric Research

The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA), a non-profit and educational membership organization committed to providing education, certification, and networking opportunities to all persons involved in clinical research activities, presents "Consent and Assent in Pediatric Research." 

Objective

This talk will address specialized considerations for offering participation in therapeutic and non-therapeutic research to children with significant illness. Regulatory aspects, role of parent decision making, and communication with children will be covered.

The presentation will address: 

• Recognizing the potential benefit to children for participating in clinical research studies
• Identifying legal and logistical considerations when enrolling children in research studies
• Presenting information on clinical research participation in developmentally appropriate way to children

Jennifer Welch, MD, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinical Research Director at Rhode Island Hospital and its Hasbro Children's Hospital; and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University
