Afshin Ehsan, MD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon, director of minimally invasive cardiac surgery and director of quality at the Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute. He is a professor of surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. His research interests include the role of steroid hormone receptors in vein graft failure; glucose control in cardiac surgery patients; gene therapy for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and genetic engineering of bio-prosthetic grafts.

Dr. Ehsan earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, and completed his residency and post doctoral training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He also holds an MBA from The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.

Dr. Ehsan previously served as surgical director of the heart failure and transplant program and director of the cardiothoracic surgery intensive care unit at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Heart Association.
