New Care Model Focuses on Reducing Your Wait Time
What can you expect in this new care model?
- Each patient is seen and assessed by our experienced greeter nurse.
- Less acute patients may go through an alternative care model, called “split flow,” designed to decrease time in the Emergency Department.
- Patients who are sicker may wait to go to a different area of our Emergency Department, for a higher level of monitoring.
Patients appropriate for the split-flow care model will be moved from the waiting room to an intake room.
In the intake room, patients are seen by a provider and a nurse. Depending on what is ordered, they may start care in the intake room, and then be sent to a shared Results Pending area.
If necessary, they may be moved to a treatment room for a brief time to have care started by the nurse. After care is started, they may be moved to our Results Pending area from the treatment room.
In the Results Pending area, patients will receive care as ordered by the provider while they wait for test results. Once results are in, the provider will bring an update.
Shared Space Mean Shorter Wait Times
Use of this multi-patient Results Pending area allows us to decrease your wait time dramatically and get your results more quickly than if everyone needed to wait for a traditional room.
If you need an X-ray, CT scan or other imaging, you will be transported to and from each of these areas.
We understand waiting can be very frustrating and difficult. We don’t want anyone to have to wait, and we apologize for the inconvenience.
We are hopeful that this new model will help decrease wait times for everyone.
Less Stress in the Emergency Department
An emergency department visit can be the most vulnerable time of a person’s life. Leah McDonald, MD, alleviates the stress at The Miriam, the only hospital in Rhode Island to provide palliative care to emergency department patients.
