The Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute (LCVI) at Rhode Island, The Miriam and Newport hospitals is dedicated to providing unparalleled care in the field of cardiology. Our expert staff of cardiologists, surgeons, electrophysiologists, nurses and clinical staff is committed to providing the highest level of care. We offer comprehensive cardiac services at multiple ambulatory center locations throughout the region for your convenience, which include cardiac diagnostic testing and intervention, cardiac rehabilitation, heart failure management, congenital heart disease management, and programs for lipid management, management of hypertension and disease prevention.

2020
Ornish Lifestyle Medicine designated the Dean Ornish Intensive Cardiac Rehab Program as a 2020 Center of Excellence. Lifespan commits to Ornish standards of value and evidence based practice in four key ares: utilization, care delivery, patient experience and operations.
2019
Rhode Island Hospital was designated a Blue Distinction Center + for Cardiac Care. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association recognizes health care facilities across the nation that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care.
2018
The Extracorporeal Life Support Program at Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s hospitals has received the gold level Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Award for Excellence in Life Support. This is the second time we have been awarded this distinction for our high level of performance, innovation, satisfaction, excellence, and exceptional care while using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Hale Wills, MD, medical director of pediatric trauma, Corey Ventetuolo, MD, of adult medicine, and Neel Sodha, MD, of adult cardiac surgery and director of the cardiovascular ICU lead the teams that demonstrate to the health care community an assurance of high quality standards, specialized equipment and supplies, defined patient protocols, and advanced education of all staff members. All bedside ECMO care is provided by the ECMO specialists of the respiratory care department along with the nursing staff on the respective ICUs. This award is valid for three years.
Rhode Island Hospital was named to the list of “50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals 2019” by IBM Watson Health. Selected based on a study that analyzed key performance metrics, including survival rates, complications, length of stay, cost, and readmission rates, the hospital earned the distinction along with just two others in New England. Rhode Island Hospital has now made this list five times and is the only hospital in the state in the rankings.
Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute at Rhode Island Hospital has been given the Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center designation for cardiac care. Distinction centers are awarded based on expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes.
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Rhode Island Hospital earned the silver designation of the Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association for Critical Care Nursing. It is one of only 42 cardiothoracic ICUs to achieve this level of recognition.
2017
Newport Hospital was the only community hospital in the state to be recognized as a “high performer” in two clinical areas – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure – by U.S. News & World Report in its 2017 Best Regional Hospitals rankings.
Continuing its excellence in stroke care, The Miriam Hospital in 2017 received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver-Plus Quality Achievement Award” and the “Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite” award. The Miriam has been honored by the association virtually every year for more than a decade.
2016
Rhode Island Hospital was recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2016 as one of 53 hospitals across the country with the lowest heart attack mortality rates.
